So sorry for your loss and thank you for sharing such a lovely tribute of your grandmother. Kansas certainly does stick to your soul. Spent many springs, summers and falls... just north of Hays... for planting and harvest. Driving for 8 hours, down from Nebraska, jammed packed in a '68 Charger. My dad flying down the highway with anticipation of helping his family and getting away from it all. Too many to list, the unforgettable memories with cousins, tornados, stray dogs and unsupervised shenanigans. The stories in one gas-pump towns, calloused hands and leathered skin of my grandparents. I always thought Kansas was a different world stepping out of mine. Spent time away, for years, when I got older. Only to return for a seldom wedding and then the funerals. Nothing had changed on my returns, except it looked smaller and worn, but still had a spot in my soul. Your tribute has me thinking of taking a road trip. To see if I will be the first one in the car to spot the old farm silos. Sending you positive vibes J.R.

Sorry for you loss, JR. Beautiful song and a great story/tribute for your Grandma.

And now I know where the line “these Kansas wheat fields won’t break us” from Oven comes from.

Condolences to you and yours. This was an amazing tribute. Your words are inspirational. I'm an east coaster that ended up in Lawrence, Ks many years ago (saw 7M3 the first time at the Granada). I appreciate the laid back Midwestern life. I think a trip here for a lot of people is cleansing and therapeutic. Sending healing vibes to you.

Flying over the patchwork of colored squares, stacked circles of crop land, and abandoned plots seemingly not worth the effort to irrigate lends itself to introspection and reassessing what is really valuable in life. It sounds like your grandmother had it figure out. Her legacy is a real gift, thank you for sharing it with us, JR. The raw reflection and hard-won maturity that you’ve shown in these posts is a joy to read and I hope that some future day affords us the opportunity to talk about it in person.

I don't know why, but reading this took me towards thoughts of Walt Whitman's work. Great share...the emotion resonates. And Where the Streets Have No Name is definitely in my playlist. You have no choice but to stand when that song kicks in because it just lifts you up and makes you want to do something, anything at all.

Sorry for your loss and know she is at peace. She lives on in your tales.

Sorry for your loss. She sounds like she was a pistol! My grandparents were a huge influence on me, too. I carry them forward, as you will, too. XO ❤️

Isn’t it crazy how at some point in life you can’t wait to never see a place again… then years later you have to go back(why is it always an end) and you never realized how much you never want to leave? My place was upstate NY/ hills of Pennsylvania. Now that so much of my family there are gone I just wish I could be that skinny, nock-kneed kid running in those hills again. Love the story of your granny- I think I’d of loved to sit and chat with her💕
