Next day i think i drove alone to Huntington, Alabama, to catch yr show there. talking with thomas on the parking lot, as he was learning a new tune.

Love the control you had in the song. One of the reasons I enjoyed listening to you sing. Ability to pull the power back to phrasing that could soothe your soul. Also, enjoyed the strip down vibe of the band during Backbooth era.
For whatever it’s worth, I never saw you as a pretender. How could your words resonate with so many if you were not speaking truth--bravely , brazenly in front of throngs of hungry seekers? This soul seeker finds more wisdom and revelation in your thoughtful and inspired words every time I listen to your voice. Two regrets I live with: that I didn’t HEAR your music because I was too busy with the busyness of life, and that we didn’t stay connected. I guess it’s like we used to say, “shouldacouldawoulda.” Life is strange, my old friend.

I always loved your version of this song. After hearing it I immediately learned it and started covering it occasionally at my own shows.

It was hearing the cover of Barroom girls that made me go buy a Gillian Welch CD, and I was not disappointed.
