Been following High Shelter since last January. Your vision for the possibilities of this platform has inspired me to do the same for an abandoned musical project. I'm loving the fact that these orphaned songs, snippets and insights have found the light.
Random question JR: were you at the Afghan Whigs / Eagles of Death Metal show at Terminal 5 in the Fall of 2012?
Hey JR, Gunner from Wichita. Long time listener, first time caller. Ive been trying to write a new song each month for the past couple of years. Each one is like putting a puzzle together with different thoughts. I usually make sure I have a good opening line and an interesting hook. I try not to be too literal. Etc. Sometimes it feels like a golf swing and there are too many things I’m thinking about. I have to remind myself to just close my eyes and swing. I am curious if you have a checklist of things that you go through while you are writing?
I've tried to abandon the checklist, honestly. Starting with one seems to make everything sound the same. I took some bad advice when I was younger about what songs "must have". "Verse chorus verse chorus bridge chorus out" - that kind of thing. Honestly now I think it's all come full circle and its so wonderfully shocking just to hear a song where something sounds real - more emotionally resonant than structured a particular way. If I was forced to say whats most important to me now I would say melody and restraint. John Lennon's advice still seems like mighty path though - I might massacre the quote but it was something like: "tell the truth, make sure it rhymes" JR
I love that sound. The guitar reminds me of a video I watched years ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZNfaPARzXJo
Thanks 7M3 I love music that makes me think.
Love it! Such a great song!
JR,
One of the best songs written ever, "Favorite Dog"! Thanks
Love it! ❤️
